What are Dental Fillings?

Modern dental fillings restore teeth damaged by decay and help prevent further decay by closing off spaces where bacteria can enter. Fillings are also used to repair cracked or broken teeth and teeth that have been worn down from misuse (such as from nail-biting or tooth grinding).

Types of Dental Fillings

There are several types of materials used for dental fillings, each with its own advantages:

Composite Fillings (Tooth-Colored)

Composite fillings are made of a resin and glass mixture that can be matched to the color of your natural teeth. They are popular because they blend in with your teeth and are less noticeable than other types of fillings. Composite fillings are also versatile and can be used to repair chipped, broken, or worn teeth.

Amalgam Fillings (Silver)

Amalgam fillings are made of a mixture of metals including silver, mercury, copper, and tin. They are very durable and can last for many years. However, they are more noticeable than composite fillings due to their silver color.

Gold Fillings

Gold fillings are made of gold alloy and are very durable, lasting 15 years or more. They are well-tolerated by gum tissues and may last longer than amalgam fillings. However, they are more expensive than other types of fillings and require multiple visits to place.

Ceramic Fillings

Ceramic fillings are made of porcelain and are very durable and aesthetically pleasing. They are resistant to staining and can be matched to the color of your natural teeth. However, they can be more expensive than composite fillings.

The Filling Process

Getting a dental filling typically involves the following steps:

  1. Numbing: Your dentist will numb the area around the tooth to be filled with a local anesthetic.
  2. Removing Decay: The dentist will use a drill or laser to remove the decayed portion of the tooth.
  3. Cleaning: The cavity is cleaned to remove bacteria and debris.
  4. Filling: The filling material is placed in the cavity and shaped to match your tooth.
  5. Polishing: The filling is polished to ensure a smooth surface.

After Getting a Filling

After getting a filling, you may experience:

  • Sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures
  • Sensitivity to pressure
  • Slight discomfort when biting

These symptoms are usually temporary and should resolve within a few days. If they persist or become severe, contact your dentist.

Caring for Your Fillings

To maintain your fillings and prevent future cavities:

  • Brush your teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss daily to remove plaque between teeth
  • Visit your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings
  • Limit sugary foods and beverages
  • Consider using a fluoride mouthwash

When to Replace Fillings

Fillings don't last forever. They may need to be replaced if they become worn, cracked, or if decay develops around them. Regular dental checkups help your dentist identify when a filling needs to be replaced before it causes more serious problems.
